Reading fight lines is easy, once you know how. Let’s use the odds from the first Ken Shamrock-Tito Ortiz fight as an example. A week or so before the fight the odds looked like this:
Ken Shamrock +150
Tito Ortiz -200
The fighter that has a plus sign next to his name is the underdog (in this case Shamrock). The number next to the plus sign is the amount you win if you bet $100. (Of course you don’t have to bet $100, you can bet much less if you want.)
Example/Underdog: Ken Shamrock +150. If you bet $100 on Shamrock and he wins, you get $150 back (plus your original $100 for a total of $250). Or if you want to bet less, say $50 on Shamrock and he wins, you get $75 back (plus your original $50 for a total of $125.)
The fighter that has a negative sign next to his name is the favorite (in this case Ortiz). The number next to the negative sign is the amount you must bet in order to win $100. (Of course you don’t have to bet $100, you can bet much less if you want.)
Example/Favorite: Tito Ortiz -200. If you bet $200 on Ortiz and he wins, you get $100 back (plus your original $200 for a total of $300). Or if you want to bet less, say $50 on Ortiz and he wins, you get $25 back (plus your original $50 for a total of $75.)
The good thing is that once you make your bet, you are locked in at those odds. Meaning if you bet an underdog at +150 and then a few days go by and a lot of other folks also bet the underdog, his odds will drop. In other words the +150 may look like +125 after ‘late money’ comes in on him. (Remember, what causes lines to change is when a lot of money is bet on a particular fighter.) People betting on him now, will earn less if he wins.
Of course this can work the other way too. If late money comes in on your opponent, then your fighters’ odds will rise. Just remember that the timing of your bet is also important. Watch the lines for a few days leading up to a fight and then jump in when you see a good number.
